Step by step

  1. Install a monitoring overlay (NVIDIA app/GeForce overlay, AMD Adrenalin, or MSI Afterburner with RivaTuner).
  2. Play the game and watch GPU usage. Near 95-100% means the GPU is the limit (normal and fine).
  3. If GPU usage sits well below 90% and one or more CPU threads are near 100%, the CPU is the limit.
  4. To test: lower the resolution. If FPS doesn't rise, you're CPU-limited. If it rises a lot, you're GPU-limited.
  5. CPU-limited: close background apps, lower CPU-heavy settings (view distance, crowds, physics), and make sure RAM runs at its rated speed (XMP/EXPO in BIOS).
