Sounds like this?

  • 'Plugged in, not charging'
  • Charging light off
  • Charges only at certain angles
  • Battery stuck at a percentage

Step by step

  1. Check the wall outlet with another device, and reseat both ends of the charger, including the cord into the power brick.
  2. Look into the laptop's charging port with a flashlight for lint or bent pins. Clean gently with a wooden toothpick only.
  3. For USB-C laptops, try another USB-C port and confirm the charger has enough watts (65 W+ for most laptops).
  4. Check if charging is limited on purpose: many maker apps (Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS, Dell Power Manager) and Windows/macOS have settings that stop at 80% to protect the battery.
  5. Shut down, unplug the charger, hold the power button 15 seconds, plug back in and start.
  6. Windows: Device Manager › Batteries › right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery › Uninstall device, then restart.
  7. If you can borrow a matching charger, test it. This tells you if the charger or the laptop is the problem.
