Sounds like this?

  • Speaker icon shows a red X
  • 'No output devices found'
  • Sound stopped after Windows Update
  • Headphones work but speakers don't (or the reverse)

Step by step

  1. Click the speaker icon in the taskbar and make sure it isn't muted. Click the arrow next to the volume slider and pick the right output device.
  2. Check the hardware: unplug and replug headphones or USB speakers, and check that external speakers are on.
  3. Run the audio troubleshooter: Settings › System › Sound › Troubleshoot common sound problems › Output devices (or Get Help app).
  4. Right-click Start › Device Manager › Sound, video and game controllers. Right-click your audio device › Update driver › Search automatically.
  5. If that doesn't help, right-click the device › Properties › Driver › Roll Back Driver (if available).
  6. Still nothing? Right-click › Uninstall device (do not tick delete driver), then restart. Windows reinstalls it.
  7. Install the audio driver from your PC maker's support page (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc.) using your model number.
  8. If it began after a specific update, Settings › Windows Update › Update history › Uninstall updates lets you remove the latest one.
