- "Working on updates, don't turn off your computer" never finishes
- Update fails and rolls back after restart
- Settings shows an update error code
Step by step
- Wait at least 2 hours. If the drive light still flickers, Windows is working.
- If the PC is plugged in and nothing has changed for 3+ hours, hold the power button 10 seconds, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. Windows will usually resume or undo the update.
- Once you reach the desktop, unplug USB drives, docks, and other non-essential accessories.
- Make sure you have free space: Settings › System › Storage. Aim for at least 20 GB free for feature updates.
- Check the clock: Settings › Time & language › Date & time › turn on
Set time automatically
. A wrong clock breaks update downloads. - Run the Windows Update troubleshooter: Settings › System › Troubleshoot › Other troubleshooters › Windows Update › Run (Windows 11 may open the Get Help app).
- Restart, then go to Settings › Windows Update › Check for updates and try again.
- If one specific update keeps failing, write down its KB number and error code and search it, or bring that info to a technician.
